It is generally agreed that the 1980s were the worst decade in modern music, so a director who plucks a soundtrack from those years is either brave or foolish. Or perhaps simply trying to grab some of the cold impersonality of early digital instruments to add a unique, dark edge to an inventive movie. Strip the music away from the film, however, and you're left with a mixed bag. Aimee Mann would probably rather forget her youthful attempt to sound like the Cars on Til TuesdayΓÇÖs Voices Carry, and Oingo Boingo arenΓÇÖt high on many peopleΓÇÖs must-have lists. On the other hand, you get some prime Echo and the Bunnymen (The Killing Moon), one of Duran DuranΓÇÖs best singles (Notorious), and a song that every mortal should own, Joy DivisionΓÇÖs Love Will Tear Us Apart.
